The greenhouse layout that pays for itself
The short answer
- Fill it with ancient fruit, not starfruit, once you own kegs.
- Plan sprinklers before you plant. Moving them later wastes a season.
- Do not tile the whole floor — leave a walking spine down the middle or you cannot reach the back rows.
The greenhouse is the single best building on the farm and most players waste their first year with it. Not because the layout is complicated, but because they plant first and think about sprinklers second, and then spend a season hand-watering 120 tiles.
Getting the greenhouse
Two routes, and the choice affects your whole first year:
- Community Center — complete the Pantry bundles. Slower, but you keep the Joja membership money and get the bundle rewards along the way.
- Joja — buy the greenhouse for gold. Faster if you are already rich from fishing or mining, and it removes the scramble for seasonal crops.
Either way, once it is restored the interior is a fixed 10 by 12 grid of tillable soil surrounded by a wooden border. Nothing inside it ever dies to season change — that is the entire point.
Layout: what actually matters
The floor is 120 tiles. Sprinklers occupy tiles too, so your real crop count is somewhere around 100–116 depending on which sprinkler tier you have and whether you are on 1.6 with pressure nozzles. Chasing the absolute maximum is not worth it — three tiles of extra crop space is worth less than a layout you can walk through without thinking.
- Place sprinklers first. Work out coverage from the sprinkler tier you can actually craft today, not the iridium one you might have next year.
- Leave a vertical walking spine. Two tiles wide down the middle is enough, and it lets you reach every row for harvesting without pathing around crops.
- Put the highest-value crop at the back. You will visit the front rows most often; the back rows should be the ones that need the least attention.
- Plant fruit trees on the border. They produce year-round in the greenhouse and do not compete with crops for soil tiles.
Cheap trick: if you are short on sprinklers, run the greenhouse half-planted for one season rather than hand-watering all of it. Hand-watering 120 tiles every morning is the fastest way to quit a save file.
Ancient fruit vs starfruit
This is the only decision that really matters, and the answer depends on whether you have kegs.
| Ancient fruit | Starfruit | |
|---|---|---|
| Base sell price | 550g | 750g |
| Wine (base) | 1,650g | 2,250g |
| Wine (Artisan) | 2,310g | 3,150g |
| Growth | ~28 days, then every 7 | 13 days, replant each time |
| Seed cost | Free after seed maker | 400g, or seed maker |
| Effort per week | One harvest | Harvest + replant |
Starfruit wine sells for more per bottle. Ancient fruit still wins, for one reason: you never replant it. A greenhouse of ancient fruit produces a full batch every week forever, with zero seed cost and zero labour beyond harvesting. Starfruit needs seeds bought or made, and it needs the soil re-tilled on a 13-day cycle.
Put it another way — with Artisan and a keg per plant, a full greenhouse of ancient fruit is roughly 200k+ gold per season for about ten minutes of work a week. Starfruit can beat that in a single summer, but it costs you a season of attention and a large upfront seed bill.
Do not do this: planting starfruit in the greenhouse in year one and selling the raw fruit. Raw starfruit is only 750g. The entire advantage comes from processing it, and if you do not have kegs yet, ancient fruit is the better crop even unprocessed.
Three mistakes people make every save
- Selling the first ancient seed. Put it in the seed maker, not the shipping bin. One fruit becomes two to three seeds, and that is how the greenhouse gets filled in a single year.
- Building kegs after planting. Kegs take a week per batch. If you plant 100 ancient fruit and own 10 kegs, you are selling 90 fruits raw. Build the kegs first.
- Ignoring the border. Fruit trees on the wooden border produce every day of the year in there. It is free money that most players never notice.
What to do with the gold
Once the greenhouse is running, the bottleneck moves from money to time. The usual next steps are the cellar for ageing wine, then the island farm for a second greenhouse — the same layout works there, so you only have to solve it once.
